Description Oral rehydration therapy containing a balanced mixture of glucose, glycine and electrolytes. Actions Nonantibiotic supportive treatment. Glucose and glycine are actively absorbed by the intestinal tract causing water and sodium to be absorbed simultaneously with these nutrients, ensuring a high degree of rehydration in scouring and dehydrated dogs, cats and young farm animals. Indications Diarrhoea and dehydration in dogs, cats, lambs, foals, piglets and calves due to nutritional, bacterial or viral causes; stress from travel or surgery; convalescence. Withholding Periods Nil. Dosage and Administration Add the contents of section A and section B to 2 L of warm water. Stir until dissolved. Feed the quantity prescribed; refrigerate the remainder for next use. Prepare fresh solution daily. Sections A and B must be used together. To prepare 500 mL of solution, 1 level 5 mL medicine spoonful of powder from section A to 3 heaped spoonfuls of powder from section B; stir until dissolved. Dogs, cats. Make available the solution following specific treatment for the condition indicated. The following doses are recommended; give two to three times daily. Miniature dogs, cats: 125 mL. Small dogs: 250 mL. Medium dogs: 500 mL. Large dogs: 750 mL. Approximately 75% of dogs find Lectade palatable and will drink the solution voluntarily. Palatability for cats is variable. Lectade may also be administered orally via dosing syringe. Continue treatment for one to two days after the animal appears clinically recovered and is feeding normally. Foals. The made up solution has been administered orally to scouring or dehydrated foals by drenching bottle or stomach tube. As a guide 1 to 2 L given two to three times daily, depending on bodyweight and severity, has been reported as a suitable dosage regimen for neonatal foals. Calves. For scouring calves, withdraw milk or milk replacer entirely as soon as symptoms show and feed 2 L of made up solution twice daily for two days (four feeds). It is essential that no milk or milk replacer is fed during this period. For each of the four feeds following this two day period, use 1 L of solution together with 1 L of milk or milk replacer. Thereafter feed normal diet. For bought-in or stressed calves, feed 2 L of made up solution instead of milk as the first feed on arrival. For the next scheduled feed, use 1 L of solution together with 1 L of milk or milk replacer. Thereafter feed normal diet. Adequate colostrum should be fed to neonatal calves. Pigs. For suckling pigs, make available freshly made up solution to the whole litter in a cube drinker or similar clean vessel as soon as scour symptoms show. A litter of 1 week old piglets will consume approximately 2 to 3 L/day. Weaned pigs showing signs of scour should have fresh solution made available in a suitable clean vessel, cube drinker, trough or drum with nipple drinker (depending on the size of the group). Each weaner will consume approximately 1 to 2 L/day. Lectade should be made available for four days. If there has been some improvement after four days, but the scour has not cleared completely, treatment may be continued for up to 8 days in total. If there is no sign of improvement, consult a veterinary surgeon promptly. Lambs. Administer made up solution orally to scouring or dehydrated neonatal lambs by drenching bottle or stomach tube. 150 mL three times daily is a suitable dosage regimen. Note. Where specific disease control (i.e. antibiotic therapy) is indicated, it can be administered in conjunction with Lectade. Presentation Powder (duo sachets): 12's.
