Actions The direct causal association between bacterial colonisation of the tooth surface (i.e. plaque) and the inflammatory destruction of tooth attachment (periodontal disease) is well known. Chlorhexidine gluconate is recognised as the most effective substance for inhibiting plaque regrowth, and it exerts an antibacterial action for much longer than other antimicrobials. Indications Maintenance of oral hygiene and fresh breath (as well as, or instead of, brushing and scaling); prevention of periodontal disease; minimisation of the aerosol spread of live organisms during scaling; oral procedures, e.g. fracture repair, extraction. Intermittent short-term application for the prevention and control of gingivitis. For use in dogs, cats and horses. Precautions Reversible staining of the teeth occurs with long-term use. Dosage and Administration Apply with a soft bristled toothbrush or spray direct onto teeth, then brush for two minutes. Use daily or as needed, or as directed by a veterinarian.
